The CompTIA A+ course covers 4 different sectors – you’ll need exam certification in 2 different areas to reach the level of competent in A+. Because of this, the majority of colleges only offer two of the 4 sectors. We consider that this is too much of a compromise – yes you’ll have qualified, but training on all 4 will give you greater confidence in the workplace, where you’ll need to know about all of them. This is why you should train in all four areas.

A+ computer training courses cover diagnostics and fault finding – both remote access and hands-on, alongside learning to build, repair and fix and working in antistatic conditions. You may also want to consider adding Network+ training to your A+ as you’ll then be in a position to become a networking engineer, which is where the bigger salaries are.

If your advisor doesn’t ask many questions – chances are they’re just trying to sell you something. If they push a particular product before looking at your personality and whether you have any commercial experience, then it’s very likely to be the case. With a strong background, or perhaps a bit of commercial experience (maybe some existing accreditation?) then it could be that the point from which you begin your studies will be quite dissimilar from a trainee who has no experience. For students beginning IT exams and training anew, it can be helpful to ease in gradually, kicking off with some basic PC skills training first. This is often offered with most types of training.

So, why might we choose qualifications from the commercial sector instead of the usual academic qualifications taught at the state educational establishments? With the costs of academic degree’s increasing year on year, together with the industry’s recognition that vendor-based training is often far more commercially relevant, there has been a great increase in Adobe, Microsoft, CISCO and CompTIA based training programmes that create knowledgeable employees for much less time and money. Essentially, only required knowledge is taught. It’s not quite as straightforward as that, but the principle remains that students need to master the precisely demanded skill-sets (including a degree of required background) – without overdoing the detail in everything else – in the way that academic establishments often do.

Think about if you were the employer – and your company needed a person with some very particular skills. What should you do: Go through a mass of different academic qualifications from several applicants, trying to establish what they know and what vocational skills they’ve acquired, or choose a specific set of accreditations that exactly fulfil your criteria, and then select who you want to interview from that. Your interviews are then about personal suitability – rather than establishing whether they can do a specific task.

The way a programme is physically sent to you is usually ignored by most students. How many parts is the training broken down into? What is the specific order and at what speed is it delivered? Usually, you’ll join a programme taking 1-3 years and receive a module at a time. It seems to make sense on one level, but consider these issues: What happens when you don’t complete every exam? Maybe the prescribed order won’t suit you? Through no fault of your own, you may go a little slower and not receive all the modules you’ve paid for.

The ideal circumstances are to get all your study materials sent to your address right at the beginning; the whole caboodle! This way, nothing can happen down the line which could affect the reaching of your goals.

An all too common mistake that many potential students make is to choose a career based on a course, rather than starting with where they want to get to. Training academies are brimming over with direction-less students who chose a course based on what sounded good – rather than what would get them the career they desired. It’s a sad testimony to the sales skills of many companies, but a great many students kick-off study that often sounds magnificent from the sales literature, but which gets us a career that doesn’t fulfil at all. Just ask several college graduates to see what we mean.

Make sure you investigate how you feel about career development, earning potential, and if you’re ambitious or not. You should understand what (if any) sacrifices you’ll need to make for a particular role, which particular exams are needed and how to develop your experience. Talk to an experienced industry professional that understands the work you’re contemplating, and could provide a detailed run-down of what you actually do in that role. Contemplating this before you start on any learning program makes a lot of sense, doesn’t it?
